Common Core State Standards

0 Points

Teachers transitioning to Common Core will find success when they apply the techniques to build on previous successes while keeping a focus on the updated expectations of the Common Core. Critical to the transition is the extension of the skills, training, and success that teachers have found in the past.

“The success of standards-based reform and NCLB remains a matter of debate, but the goal of students being globally competitive is increasing infused into the literature and public debate around school improvement and school reform.” (Jones, Jones, & Hargrove, 2003; Kohn, 2004; Wager, 2008; Zhao, 2007)

common-coreAssessment

  • Continue common assessments
  • Refocus on writing, with a critical eye for understanding “arguments”
  • Balance conceptual and procedural knowledge
  • Learn performance task development
  • Move toward a mastery orientation

Curriculum

  • Expand the use of expository texts
  • Look for digital literacy and media
  • Pace for mastery
  • Back plan from anchor standards and mathematical principals

Instruction

  • Embed collaboration
  • Provide learning strategies
  • Emphasize critical thinking and choice
  • Develop student self-efficacy

The transition to Common Core represents the logical “next step” for teachers. By framing it in terms they already know, the transition can be inspiring and motivating. Framed incorrectly, the transition may become daunting and overwhelming.
