Instructional Coaching

0 Points

The emphasis on “coaching” support for administrators and teachers has become increasingly common in education over the past decade. However, the definition of what exactly “coaching” is varies across districts, companies, and organizations. We use a model that incorporates a three-tiered, interactive model based on national consulting work with business and school development. Coaching styles adjust to the setting and the needs of the individual or content: expert, collaborative, and cognitive approaches. Domains of coaching cut across the organization and adapt to the overall structure of the organization: executive, managerial, operational.

The largest effect sizes for improvement in instructional practices follows a full system of support: Theory/Demonstration/Practice/Feedback/Coaching. (Joyce and Showers, 1998)

We design our coaching process to meet our client’s needs.

Examples:

  • Content area coaching
    • Coaching by content area department in a H.S.
  • Strategy coaching
    • Coaching around a specific strategy like Direct Instruction
  • Program coaching
    • Support the implementation of a new program school-wide
  • Administrative coaching
    • Provide support to administrators through strategic planning, walk-throughs, and cross-site visits
