“It’s all about how you approach challenges. If you look at them as obstacles that are insurmountable, they will be. If you look at them as obstacles you can learn from or move through, your partnerships and relationships will grow stronger as you move through them. The rewards are worth it”
– Shannon Villanueva, M.A., Principal, DeMille Elementary School

The Golden Bell Awards, now in its 38th year, recognizes public school programs that are innovative, sustainable, and make a demonstrated difference for students. Golden Bell Awards reflect the depth and breadth of education programs and governance decisions supporting these programs that are necessary to address students’ changing needs. This awards program highlights best practices in education in all areas of operations, instruction and support services.
DeMille Elementary School started with two Kindergarten classes. Today, they have two 2nd grade classes, two 1st grade classes, and three Kindergarten classes. Every year they plan to add another grade level to the program. Here are some other great stats on the groundbreaking school:
- DeMille currently has a population of approximately 500 K-6 grade students including preschool and Special Education
- The student body is comprised of many ethnic groups, the largest of which are Hispanic (54%), Asian (39%), and Other (7%)
- 79% of the students are English Language Learners
- 88% receive free or reduced lunch
- DeMille also houses two SDC classes: A Pre-K SUCSSES class and a K-2 SUCSSES class for students with Autism
“We are so proud to be the first school in California to offer a Vietnamese Dual Language Immersion Academy and it is an honor to receive a prestigious Golden Bell award for this exceptional program. We couldn’t have achieved this success without the support of our parents and community partners and we will continue to foster these relationships as we move forward,” says Villanueva.
With this collaborative mentality, we know whatever Demille touches will continue to turn to gold. For now, let’s say congrats on their current success!
